StateNevada
NameDunlap Formation
Geologic ageEarly Jurassic to Middle Jurassic
Original map labelJd
CommentsThe thickness of the Dunlap Formation ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 feet thick.
Primary rock typesandstone
Secondary rock typeconglomerate
Other rock typesvolcanic rock (aphanitic); limestone; siltstone; shale
Lithologic constituents
Major
Sedimentary > Clastic > Conglomerate (Bed)Upper part in Pilot Mountains and Garfield Hills derived almost entirely from underlying Luning limestone and dolomite (Ross, 1961). Conglomerate clasts in Esmeralda County are primarily chert pebbles (Albers and Stewart, 1972)
Sedimentary > Clastic > Sandstone (Bed)Includes some tuffaceous sandstone.
Minor
Igneous > Volcanic > Mafic-volcanic (Flow)Includes greenstone, greenstone breccia, felsite, and tuff; probably close to major in rank.
Incidental
Sedimentary > Clastic > Mudstone > Shale (Bed)Reported in the Dunlap Formation in Esmeralda County (Albers and Stewart, 1972).
Sedimentary > Clastic > Siltstone (Bed)Reported in the Dunlap and Dunlap(?) Formation in northern Nye County (Kleinhampl and Ziony, 1985).
Sedimentary > Carbonate > Limestone (Bed)
