Limestone, dolomite, and shale

LIMESTONE, DOLOMITE, AND SHALE (Upper Paleozoic)-Includes Van Duzer Limestone of Decker (1962)
StateNevada
NameLimestone, dolomite, and shale
Geologic ageMississippian to Permian
Original map labelPMc
CommentsThe Van Duzer Limestone is more than 7,200 feet thick but is limited to one large outcrop in Bull Run Quadrangle. See NVOCt for the other rocks in the area which resemble the Van Duzer Limestone. The remainder of this unit is described by Coats, 1987, as "the unit of limestone, shale, chert, orthoquartzite, and quartz siltite". It includes the Poorman Peak and Hammond Creek Formations as well as outcrops too faulted to be divided into formations. Thicknesses range from 1,800 to 4,300 feet thick. Coats, 1987, does not include dolomite in this unit.
Primary rock typelimestone
Secondary rock typeshale
Other rock typessandstone; quartzite; siltstone; chert; conglomerate
Lithologic constituents
Major
Sedimentary > Clastic > Mudstone > Shale (Bed)Possibly only minor in rank but generally prevelent throughout unit.
Sedimentary > Carbonate > Limestone (Bed)
Minor
Sedimentary > Clastic > Siltstone (Bed)
Metamorphic > Quartzite
Incidental
Sedimentary > Clastic > Conglomerate (Bed)Locally present in the valley of Camp Creek
Sedimentary > Chemical > Chert (Bed)May also be present in lenses and nodules.
Sedimentary > Clastic > Sandstone (Bed)Possibly minor in rank, though unlikely, depending on how much of it is considered quartzite. Mostly arenite.
