Geologic setting

Geologic description

Phosphate deposits restricted to black chert and shale unit of the Alapha Limestone of late Mississippian age. Phosphate rock and phosphorites occur within a section of interbedded oolitic to pisolitic limestone, chert, and shale. Marked variation in lithologic character of phosphate content. Fluorite was a constituent of all samples studied.
Geologic map unit (-151.892818593442, 68.2995671103853)
Mineral deposit model Bedded phosphorite (Cox and Singer, 1986; model 34c).
Mineral deposit model number 34c
Age of mineralization Mississippian.

Production and reserves

Workings or exploration A 36 ft thick sequence averages 8 percent P2O5; a 43 in. thick sequence averages 21 percent P2O5; and 6 beds, none more than 5.5 in. thick, contain 30 percent P2O5. Samples analyzed for vanadium contained 0.04 percent - 0.10 percent V2O5. Samples collected by USBM contained up to 23 percent phosphate with 1035 ppm V.
Indication of production None
