Geologic setting

Geologic description

The area is underlain mainly by andesitic to dacitic flows and agglomerates, andesitic and felsic tuffs, volcaniclastic sandstones and siltstones, and graywacke of the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous Koyukuk terrane. Scattered throughout the area are younger (Tertiary?) felsic and mafic dikes which cut the older rocks. A complete geologic description of the Stuyahok area is available in USGS Open-File Report 96-505-A (Miller and others, 1996) .

Production and reserves

Workings or exploration Surface: Hydraulic and dragline methods used. Drilling and sampling was done in gold placer deposits in 1994 by a crew from Calista Corporation and in 1995 by the USGS and Calista Corporation. A cut was leased and mined from 1994 through 1996.
Indication of production Yes; small
Production notes Cobb (1973) estimated production at 23,000 - 30,000 oz. of Au. Mined from 1921-1940.
