Geology

The Bagdad mine is a porphyry copper deposit containing both sulfide and oxide mineralization. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite are the dominant primary sulfides and are the primary economic minerals in the mine. Chalcocite is the most common secondary copper sulfide mineral, and the predominant oxide copper minerals are chrysocolla, malachite and azurite.

Geology

“The deposit occurs in a group of Late Cretaceous granodiorite to quartz monzonite stocks which intrude Proterozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks (Fig. 1b). The Precambrian metamorphic rocks have been subdivided into three formations. The oldest is the Bridle Formation, which consists of metamorphosed andesitic and basaltic rocks, and intercalated sedimentary rocks and tuffs. The Bridle Formation is overlain by the Butte Falls tuff, which comprises metamorphosed volcanoclastic and pyroclastic rocks. The youngest formation, the Hillside mica schist, represents metamorphosed shale and sandstone.”; “Presently, hypogene ore is being mined at Bagdad, and recoverable metals occur mainly as chalcopyrite and molybdenite, with minor tetrahedrite. Pyrite is abundant as a gangue sulfide mineral. Mineralization occurs mostly in stockworks, veins and veinlets but also as massive veins, breccias, and disseminated in miariolitic cavities. Minor coarse-grained (3–10 mm) molybdenite-bearing veins are in the adjacent Precambrian rocks.”
