Information leading to the delineation of this focus area

Basis for focus area Goethite and limonite ores in post-glacial weathering deposits (Mn bogs) in Columbia and Dutchess counties, New York. Focus area encompasses buffers around 13 nearby Mn occurrences in MRDS. Numerous historical mining locations in Connecticut. Deposits are minor historical occurrences and are ranked low priority.
Identified resources Historical production of iron.
Production Pauling limonite mine (New York) produced more than 1,000,000 tons of ore with 46.5% Fe and 1.8% Mn.
Status Past mining.
Estimated resources Unknown.
Geologic maps Barksdale (1929), scale 1:24,000; Gates (1979), scale 1:24,000; Zen and Hartshorn (1966), scale 1:24,000.
Geophysical data Inadequate aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric coverage.
Favorable rocks and structures Weathered carbonate and schist over Walloomsac and Stockbridge Formations (Dale, 1923b; Ratcliffe, 1974).
Deposits New York: Weed limonite mine (MRDS dep_id: 10067323), Reynolds limonite mine (MRDS dep_id: 10067324), Gott-Mesick Bog Mn occurrence (MRDS dep_id: 10067436), Goodsell Bog Mn occurrence (MRDS dep_id: 10110227), Palmer Bog Mn occurrence (MRDS dep_id: 10067437), Dakin limonite mine (MRDS dep_id: 10067326), Pauling limonite mine (MRDS dep_id: 10067399), Amenia limonite mine (MRDS dep_id: 10067400).
Evidence from mineral occurrences MRDS.
Geochemical evidence Favorable mineralogy (siderite) and rock type (limonite).
Geophysical evidence Unknown.
Evidence from other sources Unknown.
Comments Minor bog deposits in weathered bedrock and glacial deposits (Harder, 1910). Major Fe producing district from 1735 to 1900. Manganese-rich ore was used locally.
Cover thickness and description Variable limited cover and glacial cover estimated at less than 2-50 m.

New data needs Geologic mapping at 1:24,000 scale in New York; evaluate locations on lidar.
Geologic mapping and modeling needs 1:24,000 scale mapping.
Geophysical survey and modeling needs High resolution aeromagnetic and aeroradiometric data needed for framework geology.
Digital elevation data needs Lidar complete for eastern half of focus area; planned/funded for western half.
