Comments | Named as a formation in Moose River Group after Tarratine railroad stop in Brassua Lake 15-min quad, west-central ME. Type section is along right-of-way of Canadian Pacific Railroad between Tarratine, on west side of Misery Ridge, and Somerset Junction on east side of ridge. Occurs in northern Somerset and western Piscataquis Cos., ME. Thick beds form cliffs bordering Enchanted Pond and slopes of Hedgehog Mountain in Spencer Lake 15-min quad. Consists mainly of blue-gray, dark-brown-weathering, well-indurated sandstone; some thin beds of dark-gray, gray- to dark-brown-weathering slate; and black, rusty- or gray- to dark-gray-weathering siltstone. Also contains Misery quartzite member (new) and McKenney Ponds limestone member (new). Maximum thickness is 10,000 ft. Lower contact of main body is gradational in one place and sharply disconformable in other places with the McKenney Ponds limestone member. Lower contact with Seboomook formation is gradational; conformably underlies Kineo volcanic member of Tomhegan formation. Report includes geologic map and correlation chart. (ME003) Unit description from USGS GEOLEX website (ME078). GS - Greenschist facies; W - Weakly metamorphosed; contains local occurrences of prehnite and pumpellyite; Protolith E - Feldspathic sandstone. |
