  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2009 (process 1 of 1)
    Geologic units (polygons) and linear features (arcs) from the source publications were combined in a common data structure stored using PostgreSQL with PostGIS. Additional linkages and calculations were added to improve the connections between these geometrical and geological data and other, related data including publications, lithology, geographic areas, and other scientific data in the same areas. Information about any given unit is stored in XML in a separate table to facilitate access via web services. Map interfaces providing this information in interactive form are at https://mrdata.usgs.gov/general/alaska.html and https://mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/alaska.html

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

    This compilation is an ongoing process; currently (2014). In order to be included here, geologic map data must be available in a manner compatible with this state-wide compilation. Consequently this compilation lacks geologic map information for the following quadrangles: Amukta, Arctic, Atka, Atlin, Barrow, Barter Island, Beechey Point, Chandler Lake, DeLong Mountains, Demarcation Point, Eagle, Flaxman Island, Howard Pass, Killik River, Meade River, Misheguk Mountain, Mount Michelson, Noatak, Phillip Smith Mountains, Point Hope, Sagavanirktok, Saint Lawrence, Samalga Island, Seguam, Table Mountain, Tanacross, Teshekpuk, Umnak, Unalaska, Unimak, Wainwright
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
    Geologic map data included are those constructed to conform to the standards of the state-wide compilation. This requires that geologic units be assigned a unit identifier "nsakey" with attributes corresponding to the common schema used for the compilation. Consequently the editing process by which data were converted to this schema includes significant effort at making the descriptions of units and faults consistent. The source maps, however, may have been originally created by a variety of different authors, and that variety may need to be kept in mind as one examines these data, especially when comparing detailed descriptions of units from different parts of the state.

    These data come from USGS Open-File Reports that represent preliminary parts of a larger planned series of integrated geologic databases that will ultimately be available for the entire United States. This interim version is being released now in order to provide ready access to standardized geologic data for use in regional analyses and to meet product distribution goals. The final compilation of these state databases will allow integration of the data that are found on state-scale geologic maps, presented in a uniform database structure. This Open-File Report is similar to but will not be identical to the final version of these data.
