Why was the data set created?

The original map was intended to provide a generalized mineral resource assessment of the country of Costa Rica. The supporting data would be of appropriate detail to carry out regional analysis of mineral resources and related geological concerns, but would likely be too coarse to answer detailed questions that require locational accuracy within a few kilometers.

Note that the original work was provided in paper form and digitized in the mid-1990s, consequently these data do not include a lot of details about either the geologic units or the mineral occurrences. Many of the mineral occurrences are also listed in the Mineral Resource Data System (MRDS).

This information is no more current than it was when published in 1987, meaning no revisions have occurred and no new information added to these data since that time.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
    DDS-19-R (source 1 of 2)
Schruben, Paul G., 1997, Geology and resource assessment of Costa Rica at 1:500,000 scale; a digital representation of maps of the U.S. Geological Survey's 1987 folio I-1865: Digital Data Series DDS-19-R, U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
DDS-19 included geochemical analysis of samples from the Tilaran region. However these data contained a number of confusing and duplicative features, and the proper repository for such observations would be the National Geochemical Database. Accordingly the geochemistry table in DDS-19 has been omitted from this collection.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
Geospatial data here consist of geologic units, faults, and mineral occurrences at 1:500,000 scale and a similar collection of data at the more detailed 1:100,000 scale for the Tilaran region only. These data of different scale are stored in separate database tables.

Potential users should note that the current conversion of these data did not include correction or update of the basic information.
