These data were assembled and edited to contribute to a mineral resource assessment of Afghanistan and adjacent countries. Consequently the site descriptions are not intended to document fine details of the workings at each occurrence location.

    Date: 2015 (process 1 of 1)
    Information on phosphate occurrences and deposits was obtained from published literature. Distribution and extent of geologic units that might host phosphate deposits was drawn from geologic maps of 1:1,000,000 scale.
  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
    Within Afghanistan, only a handful of known occurrences and reports indicate the presence of phosphate in sediments and carbonatite. Of these, only the Khanneshin carbonatite has been studied extensively.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
    Geologic units included here were drawn from 1:1,000,000 scale maps, and include those whose lithologies indicate they could be host rocks for phosphate deposits. Deposits and potential host lithologies in countries neigboring Afghanistan were included in this study because the lithologic units are likely to extend into Afghanistan or similar units may be present there.
