Geologic map with faults, along with additional scientific information needed for mineral resource assessment (geochemical analyses, mineral occurrences, geologic terranes, and estimated undiscovered resources)
Purpose:
This publication attempts to apply much of the geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and mineral occurrence information to a single objective focused on producing a mineral resource assessment for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. However, the value of this publication lies not within the results of the mineral resource assessment nor within the interactive PDF files which can be viewed on the screen, but within the geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and mineral occurrence digital map coverages and databases which can be used for their own unique applications.

The publication provides the geologic map units and faults in separate ArcInfo coverages for the eastern, central, and western parts of the island. These were combined in this compilation. Process contact does not remember, in 2021, the source used to obtain the 1:20,000 scale map quadrangle boundaries.
Completeness_Report:
The published report includes data layers that are not included in this compilation, but remain available from the USGS publications web site: metallic and nonmetallic mineral resource records from MRDS; location of placer, gold, and skarn deposits, gravity contours and station locations; stream-sediment geochemical analyses; geology of Isla de Mona and Isla de Vieques; and shaded relief.

Conversion to PostgreSQL with PostGIS geometry of the ArcInfo interchange files for geologic units, faults, terranes, gravity, and magnetic anomaly contours, along with map quadrangle boundaries. Addition of a column to the geologic unit table to hold a controlled term for generalized lithology from LithClass 6.2, using information provided in the description of map units as a guide. Map quadrangle boundaries and municipio (county-level administrative units) boundaries were obtained from other sources. Change of coordinate system of original data from geographic NAD27 to geographic WGS84 by PostGIS version 2.0 and Proj.4.
